A vast array of single-player content spanning the very best of the 3D "Worms™" games, ranging from shooting challenges to speed runs, whilst a collection of crazy missions, interspersed with newly fully voiced narrative FMV sequences, make up the single-player campaign. Additionally, a huge number of challenges ask the player to master the individual skills of the game (such as piloting a Jetpack or steering a Parachute) in order to complete tasks such as target shooting or collecting targets, all against the clock.

Online and Local Multiplayer

Full online play for up to 4 players over a wealth of game modes such as "Statue Defend", "Homelands" or just plain "Deathmatch", plus the ability to create your own custom game settings to play against your friends! Because of the turn-based nature of the game, it can be played multi-player offline on one screen.

Fight on the randomly generated landscapes, even save and share them, which allows for a huge amount of multi-player map options!

Massive Customisation Options

Players are able to name their teams, choose which hats they want their worms to wear, whether they wear glasses, have moustaches, what they say, which flag represents them, and even what gravestone they leave behind when they die.

Worms Weapons and Utilities

Many of the classic Worms™ weapons are present and correct, with the Holy Hand Grenade, Bazooka, Dynamite, Banana Bomb, Baseball Bat, Super Sheep and many more in your arsenal of destruction.

There is also a sprinkling of even more crazy and surreal weapons too, such as Alien Abduction, Fatkins Strike, Flood, Inflatable Scouser, Old Woman, Starburst and Bovine Blitz with which to wage war on your enemies.

Custom Built Weaponary

Players are also able to construct their own weapons from a wide selection of components. These weapons are added to the players' arsenals and remain secret until deployed, giving opponents a nasty shock.

New visual improvements, with dynamic real time lighting and post process effects and shaders, make the mayhem look even more impressive.

This edition deserves to call itself the ultimate as it is every inch one of the best Worms games I have played. Keeping true to the series but bringing new challenges and options to the table fans will find this edition irresistible. As ever you have to guide your team of worms to victory by using your weapons with accuracy plus ensuring you have the correct strategy in place. The team with the last worm standing wins the game.

For newcomers to the worms game there is a tutorial at the start to help you on your way. It is very useful as it gives you information on how to get to grips with the game but it is optional so if you feel confident then just bypass it. There are the usual choice of playing modes including quick game, two challenges, two stories and the aforementioned tutorial all of which come under the single player mode option. Your tasks in these missions are seek and destroy or theft which I found long and drawn out but none the less quite interesting.

The multi-player mode in this edition is the most exciting in my opinion. It has a host of new maps plus new weapons to keep you enthralled for hours. There is death match mode, destruction mode, survivor mode where you use one worm at any one time, homelands, statue defend which involves each team having an island, while the victor is the team who destroys all the enemy statues. You can also select what you want your team of worms to wear, from head gear to underwear it's all there. You can decide how they sound from Scots to Slovakian, which weapons you would like them to use or even design your own landscapes. Even weapons can be designed, be it gadgets to throw at your enemy or new tracker devices it's a great buzz having so many options at your disposal. This customisation function makes the game seem more individual and unique so is a welcome feature.

The worm pot is useful in terms of game strategy giving you a choice of scenarios by the pull of a slot machine lever. Whichever combination comes up if you don't like it you can just pull again until a scenario you are happy with appears. As you progress in the game you do accumulate points that you can use to buy additional items such as more maps. Loyalty objects are also available for fans who already have previous editions of Worms on their consoles. These are unique to loyal fans so unfortunately cannot be obtained by newcomers to the game.

Story mode is similar in Worms Ultimate Mayhem to that in the previous 3D versions. It is fun though somewhat challenging as you do the time travel thing again visiting a number of strange and wonderful places along the way. Many fans don't like story mode finding it tedious but I would suggest you give it a try as in this game it was quite involved so entertaining.

Summing up, Worms Ultimate Mayhem is a great sequel. The graphics are as cute and colourful as ever along with the good soundtrack with its amusing sound effects giving realism to the game. It is humorous plus entertaining giving a good 3D gaming experience. You can choose how long you want the game to be so playing a quick match or a lengthy game is optional. Playing alone or with friends you will certainly enjoy this Worms experience.
